The decision came after Councilman Dan Fetty came back from a trip on which he noticed signs honoring veterans from different campaigns such as World War II and Vietnam.

“I got to thinking, New Boston could do something to honor veterans,” Fetty said. “But not just a specific group but to honor all our veterans.”

Fetty said the village approached Kyle Signs and that company came up with the design which represents all five services.

“I think it’s great. They made such great signs,” Fetty said. “The purpose is just what the sign says, it is to honor our veterans.”

At the last meeting of New Boston Village Council, held on Jan. 6 2015 Village Administrator Steve Hamilton brought in a picture of one of the new signs honoring veterans and told Council three of the four signs were up, leaving only the sign on Gallia Street, across from the Portsmouth Waterworks office to be erected.

“I want to thank our service department tremendously for their efforts in putting these up in cold weather, probably the first of January,” Fetty said. “I understand the ground was quite hard. They’ve done a great job and went above and beyond the call of duty in getting these signs out for us.”

In addition to Kyle Signs and the village service department, Fetty thanked Ralph Imes and Mike Bell who served on the committee to come up with the design.

“They’ve done a great job,” Fetty said.

Fetty said New Boston Council members have a single goal.

“The people in New Boston will step up and, as I have always said about our six Council members – they all have one thing in common and that is doing what is going to benefit the village of New Boston,” Fetty said. “And this is a great benefit. People traveling through here from all over the country – 35,000 cars a day – these signs are going to be seen at all four entrances coming into the village of New Boston.”

In addition to Gallia Street, signs are erected at Rhodes Avenue, Lakeview Avenue and Harrisonville Avenue.

In May, New Boston Village Council decided to erect a series of signs at each of the entrances to the village honoring veterans.
