PDT Staff WriterDecades ago, drivers passing through New Boston might have choked on the output from factories and plants. Today, businesses in the village have changed, and the smell of brimstone and ash has been replaced with something a little more heavenly – and a lot more delicious! Scent from Heaven Bakery opened in New Boston two weeks ago, directly across from KFC on Rhodes Avenue in New Boston. Owner Sharon Schmidt said her most popular item wasn’t even available for the first two weeks of business, delaying her grand opening.
“Everyone wants donuts, and our freezer compressor burned out so we didn’t have anywhere to store anything to work with, and until they got it fixed, it put us off for about a week and a half,” she said. “We thought, let’s not even do a grand opening until we get the donuts going, because that’s what they want.”
Schmidt said the donuts have quickly become her most popular item.
“Since we started the donuts, (business) has tripled,” she said.
Customers can also find cakes, cookies, muffins, pies and wedding cakes. For those concerned about over-indulging their sweet tooth, Schmidt has a line just for them.
“We also offer a line of gluten-free products and sugar-free products. We’ve had like 10 orders already for gluten-free products,” she said.
Before opening Scent from Heaven Bakery in New Boston, Schmidt ran Cakes by Sharon from the carport of her Rosemount area home. She decided to open a “Christian-based business” and found the location in New Boston to be ideal for her needs.
“(It’s a) good location, busy street, with a drive-thru window and the price was right,” she said. “It’s been great. The people coming through have been wonderful, and everything is just falling into place. We’ve been truly blessed.”
A grand opening is planned for May 4 from 10 a.m until 2 p.m., with free samples and door prizes. Usual business hours are 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday, and 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday. The bakery is closed on Sundays.RYAN SCOTT OTTNEY can be reached at (740) 353-3101, ext. 235, or by e-mail at pdtwriter@ryanscottottney.com.
