Breakfast With Santa brings community together

Christmas came early this year for New Boston residents, thanks to Mayor Jim Warren and his volunteer elves.
Breakfast With Santa, which took place Saturday morning at the New Boston Community Center, has been sponsored by Mayor Warren since 1994. With the smell of pancakes and sausages in the air, families enjoyed breakfast with coffee, tea, juice or milk, as Santa and his helpers listened to requests from children as they sat on Santa’s lap.
The mayor’s sister, Opal Spears, said Santa was good Saturday morning. “He brought us some snow,” she said.
Spears said the breakfast has come a long way. She said she is the “official pancake lady,” and recalled when the breakfast first started they used small individual griddles and kept blowing fuses in the building.
“It’s a good production now,” she said. “And it’s a wonderful community service project.”
At 9:30 Saturday morning, Warren said nearly 300 had already been served and they expected to serve 700 before the breakfast wrapped up.
“It’s great to see the people come in and have a good time,” said Warren, who provides funds for the food, poinsettias and table decorations. “It’s the only way I know to give back to the community.”
